A partial contributor to this problem in children is the lack of physical education in schools. Due to budget constraints and the push for higher test scores many schools have eliminated physical education classes. Yet most educators agree that learning in all areas is increased when physical instruction is included in the curriculum. When school administrators rely on proceeds from soft drink and candy sales for needed funds they contribute to the problem as well. There is also a concern about the food served in school cafeterias.

However most nutritionists would recommend lunch programs emphasizing fruits vegetables and whole grains rather than fast food. What can educators do to promote a healthy diet in children Teach and model healthy living habits including eating nutritious foods being physically active and avoiding drugs. Do you feel uncomfortable asking your friend questions about her diabetes If she is comfortable enough to check her glucose sugar levels in front of you I bet she would be OK about answering any questions you have about s really great to hear that your friend DOES check her glucose levels. Thats the most important thing to do to keep her numbers in control. When she checks her glucose level she is using a machine that will tell her what number she is. She should not go above 140 that means she has too much glucose in her system.

The pump is sending a slow steady stream of insulin into her body. You have that happening naturally because your pancreas sends out insulin to break down the sugar in your body. Your friends pancreas doesnt work so she has to give herself the insulin. Some people give themselves injections several times a day but after you have had it for a few years and are pretty much keeping it in control you can switch to the pump which can be a lot easierIn addition to the steady flow of insulin when your friend is going to eat a meal she will probably turn a dial on the pump to allow for a quick burst of a higher dose of insulin this will take care of the food shes about to eat.

If she sees her numbers go too low she will drink orange juice or soda or even eat glucose tablets to bring her numbers up to a normal range. There is Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. Type 1 used to be called Juvenile Diabetes because just children got it and Type 2 was what adults got usually because they were overweight. Now that has changed a lot.

Children are starting to get Type 2 because so many children are overweight. Also adults are starting to get Type 1 because of weak immune systems. No one knows why this is happening but it is. The best thing you can do is tell your friend you would like to talk to her about her Diabetes I bet she will be happy to talk to you about it and glad you are interested in whats happening to her. Large national companies that advertise IRS help on TV are usually worthless unless your IRS issue is something trivial. And if it is trivial you dont really need a tax service to begin with. These companies are like any national service chain hiring lowlevel people putting them thru minimal training to follow standard procedures nobody is really in charge and nobody really cares.

Advertising means nothing. Anybody can pay money for slick advertising and anybody can claim to be the best blah blah blah. Yes I advertise myself and I do see irony in my advice. Credentials and XX years of experience also mean very little. Right here on this very forum we have a number of people who claim various respectable credentials and many years in the tax business yet some of them consistently give wrong answers and bad advice. Gouging is a relative term often confused with expensive. Expensive service could be your best choice and this is why.

You first find an expensive tax service that charges gouges you 3000. Then you find a much cheaper service that only charges you 1000. You save 2000 right Not necessarily What if the socalled expensive service is able to remove the entire 10000 while the cheap service can only cut your debt in half Then the expensive service ends up costing you 3000 while the socalled cheap service costs you TWICE as much 6000 1000 in fees plus the remaining 5000 of the IRS bill. In other words you cant shop for tax service on price no more than you can look for the cheapest doctor or cheapest lawyer.

How can you tell if your auto mechanic did a good job if you do not know much about cars Same with tax services. If they come back and tell you this is the best we could do for you how do you know if they really tried their best Or even if they knew what they were doing I dont know how you can tell. Im just pointing out the fact that its all but impossible to tell. You should not rely on your socalled networking. Just because the guy goes to the same church or his kids are your kids classmates does not make this person any good.

The best way to find a good tax person is by recommendation from his former clients somebody who already used his help and received good service and good results. As long as the recommendation is not staged by the guy himself. In other words do not ask the tax guy if he has good references because he always does. Try to find people who had IRS problems and ask who helped them. If no trustworthy references available then your next best bet is to find at least 3 local specialists who are either CPAs Certified Public Accountants or EAs Enrolled Agents.

But be careful to check how much specific experience they have in dealing with the IRS. Some CPAs and EAs never fight the IRS but simply prepare tax returns. Such people are not much help. You need the one who has handled similar IRS problems before. Wii Fit is quite the workout. Ive lost almost 5 lbs since I got mine last week. Its a lot of fun too My whole family plays everyday we all take our turns and try to beat each others scores. It will weigh you son and the weight will be accurate but the BMI may not be because the BMI is only for use with people 18 or over. The BMI isnt accurate for most people though. Muscle weights more than fat so a body builder can be told hes obese if hes going to believe the BMI. That would be ridiculous. If you do decide to get Wii Fit just make sure your son knows that yes if he does the aerobic activities for long enough he will lose weight if he needs to if you dont need to youd be unlikely to lose much and that you explain to him how BMI works and how inaccurate it can be.

It told my daughter shes overweight by 9 lbs shes 14 and not a coat rack but perfect and comfortable the way she is. Get it for the fun. The weight loss is just a bonus. Really.

Now to give a little more detail. I have a 14 yr old daughter who has been medically diagnosed as being morbidly obese. She has obviously been dealing with her weight for many years and throughout these years her mother and I have tried numerous ways to help her lose the weight. Here are some expamples of what we have done 1 Sent her to a fitness and nutrition camp She lost 27 lbs in 3 weeks but lost motivation when shbe returned home.

She went twice and then refused to go anymore 5 I have bribed her with gifts if she would only excersice 20 mins per day 6 times a week. None of the above has worked. Nutrition wise she is given very healthy and balanced meals 95 of the time. I must add that I was obese at one time and have lost 95lbs and have kept it off for over 1 12 yrs so far through excersice and diet alone. I thought that leading by example would be the trick but that has not helped either. I am afraid for her life and know first hand what a positive dramatic change her life would make if she would start excersicing everyday.

You have a really tough situation. I too have a daughter who is quite obese. Nothing seemed to work to motivate her either. Unfortunately motivation usually has to come from within. Having said that I will tell you that my daughter is now 20 years old and finally got her wake up call. In her case REAL FEAR was the motivator. Last August when she saw her doctor the doctor ordered a blood lipids and cholesterol tests because of her weight. Her cholesterol was crazy out of control. Doc. Gave her a choice of enrolling in gym classes at college or going on meds right away.

She was willing to exercise to get her cholesterol down without drugs but not to lose weight. Shes lost 15 pounds in as many weeks even though she had no such goal. She goes to the doc in a week or two to check the cholesterol levels. My daughter tells me all of the things I tried made her all the more resistant to the idea of losing weight. It made her feel like she wasnt good enough for me. There were issues with not doing homework as well which added to the problem. She also had the attitude that nothing she could do would last anyway so why bother.
